I often wonder how good Jaco, James Jamerson, and most of the jazz, rock, R&B etc artists would've been if they didn't let chemical addictions get in the way. Imagine the music we never got to hear. When you think about it, we do the same thing , though not chemically, but often fail to reach our full potential for other reasons.
