Description: Ironically, it is American Singer Dionne Warwick who is credited by British Rock and Roll historian David Nathan with originating the modern "London Sound" with 1963's release of "Anyone Who Had A Heart". British artists clamored to emulate Dionne in look, manner, stage presence, style, and vocally. "Wishin' and Hopin" a big hit for Dusty Springfield in 1964 was originally recorded by Dionne Warwick in 1963 and released as the "B" side of "This Empty Place." Dionne became the most copied US female vocalist. Dionne beat the Brit girls to the punch of "stealing" her recordings for the UK/European market by simultaneously releasing Walk On By in the USA and the UK and Walk on By bacame a monster hit in the UK and Europe as well as the USA. Dusty, Jackie, DeShannon, Cilla Black, Petula Clark, Sandie Shaw and many others were heavily influenced by Dionne. The tune "Are You There (With Another Girl) was released in December 1965 and peaked at #39 on the HOT 100 in January 1966. The sound painting epitomizes the "London Sound." Are You There is another seminal single in Dionne's catalog. Brian Wilson when asked what God would sound like stated "Dionne Warwick" and according to Serene Dominic in Burt Bacharach" Song by Song Brian Wilson cited "Are You There (With Another Girl) as being a direct influence on his masterwork "Pet Sounds", particularly the instrumental "Let's Go Away for Awhile", where traces of Bacharach/David's "Are You There (With Another Girl" are hiding in the shadows. |
