In mine it goes that at first he wanted Kiara, but like in yours, but her friends said no....and then five years later, she sees him on TV, and he's with Vitani instead(pretending that him and Vitani aren't related though). So it's like Vitani's the one singing the song, Kovu is Skater Boy, and Kiara's the girl the story was somewhat about.
